Hard water, scale and spots

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it dries or heats up, those minerals stay behind as scale and spots.

Signs you may have it

  • White crust on faucets, showerheads and glass doors
  • Spots on dishes and glasses after the dishwasher
  • Soap and shampoo that won't lather
  • A water heater that pops or rumbles

How to know for sure

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon. Your free in-home test measures it at your tap, which is also how we size a softener.

How it's fixed

A whole-home softener removes the hardness minerals before they reach your fixtures, so new scale and spotting drop off. Existing buildup still needs one good cleaning.

What a softener won't fix

Chlorine taste or smell, sediment, iron stains and sulfur smell need different treatment. If you have more than one problem, the test sorts them out.

Common questions

Is hard water unsafe?

Hardness is about scale and cleaning, not safety.

Will a softener make glass completely spot-free?

It removes the hardness that causes most spotting. Other dissolved minerals and how surfaces dry can still leave some marks.

More questions

Not sure what you need? The water test is free.

We test your water at the tap, check your plumbing and tell you what fits, with no obligation to buy.

Results depend on your water, household use and maintenance. Any performance or certification claim applies only to the specific model in your written quote. Field water tests help choose equipment; they don't show whether water is safe to drink.
